Is drinking water while standing bad. It is not uncommon to find people doing videos and sharing health tips here and there. There is the particular one that says that drinking water while standing is bad for your kidneys. You probably might have heard it from family, friends, or even on some social media platform. Some go to the extent of saying it can cause health problems. The question is “is this really the case”? Drinking water is very important for our health, yes, but does it matter the posture we take when drinking water? Should we worry whether we should sit or stand while drinking water?. But does your posture really affect your kidneys as some say? Read ahead to know what science and medical experts have to say.
Some alternative health practictioners go to the extend of warning against drinking water while standing. Others also make wild claims that it can cause even kidney problems, joint pains, or and digestive problems. These school of thought has been with some communities for many decades. But the truth is that, many of these don’t have any scientific proven research.
What do the experts say
Dr Kiran B J, Consultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician, Bangalore Hospitals, Bangalore, has this to say, “From a medical standpoint, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that drinking water while standing adversely affects the function of kidneys. The kidneys are highly efficient organs that continuously filter blood and regulate fluid balance, regardless of body posture during water intake.”
The issue of having problems with kidneys because you drank water while standing has no Medical research supporting it. The kidneys work all the time to filter blood and remove waste, no matter what position you are in.
No study supports the idea that drinking water while standing can cause kidney damage. A research work that was published in the Journal of Nephrology looked at hydration habits and kidney health. It came out that the most important factor for kidney health is staying well-hydrated throughout the day, not the position in which you drink water.
Is There Any Benefit to Sitting and Drinking Water?
Some experts say that sitting down to drink water can help you be more mindful. When you sit, you may drink more slowly and pay attention to how much water you’re taking in. This can help you stay better hydrated. Mindful hydration is good for your overall health, but it does not mean that standing and drinking are bad for your kidneys.
If you prefer to sit and drink water, that’s great. If you find yourself drinking while standing, that’s fine too. The key is to make sure you drink enough water every day. Adults should aim for about 2 to 3 liters of water daily, but this can vary based on your age, activity level, and climate.
What really matters to your kidneys
What matters to your kidneys is that you are drinking enough water. Your kidneys need you to be well hydrated, and so drink enough water. What matters is that you don’t take too much salt as that will only lead to high blood pressure, and high blood pressure can cause kidney disease.
What matters again is that you are checking your consumption of sugary foods, too much of everything is bad, and an overload of sugar in your body will give you diabetic problems.
Do not abuse painkillers. There is enough research to prove that abuse of painkillers can cause kidney disease. Even if you were given by a doctor, report back to your doctor when they are finished and you still feel pain.
Now, keep a healthy body weight. That will prevent obesity, the reason is that there is a correlation between obesity and kidney disease. Hope these few tips help
Conclusion
Speaking to Dr Elliot Koranteng Tannor, a Nephrologist (Kidney specialist) at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, he mentioned that “let us stick to what is in the books”. As it stands there is nothing to support this notion and it does not really matter the way people make it seem.
Drinking water while standing does not cause kidney damage and should not be allowed to fly.
In the name of keeping one’s health, people have all sorts of myths and this is one of them. If you come across any such video or information anywhere, you can be rest assured that it is not the truth about kidneys.
